Federal Funding Announcement under the Disaster and Mitigation Adaptation Fund
April 1, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

On April 1, 2022 the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, announced federal funding, under the Disaster and Mitigation Adaptation Fund, in the amount of $214
million to ensure the safety and reliability of the City of Iqaluit’s long term water supply system.

Permafrost degradation, as a result of climate change, has impacted Iqaluit’s piped water infrastructure causing water loss, frequent drinking water disruptions and boil water advisories. This funding will allow for the replacement and modernization of this impacted infrastructure.

Additionally, Iqaluit has faced water shortages for several years due to drought conditions. These funds will enable the City to secure a new long term water source and drinking water storage that is both reliable and sustainable.

This will meet present and long term drinking water needs while supporting the needs of our growing population and bolstering economic growth – a key step needed to allow new development to proceed.

“I am elated and beyond thankful to the Government of Canada, not only for listening to our request, but for truly hearing us and taking the critical action required to address the long term water crisis that has been impacting Iqalummiut. This announcement is a game changer for the City of Iqaluit and represents important and tangible steps towards addressing critical issues including water shortages, housing and development limitations faced by Iqalummiut and Nunavummiut. Thank you for your investment, in our future and our wellbeing.”

His Worship Kenny Bell, Mayor of the City of Iqaluit

“This investment in the City of Iqaluit’s water infrastructure ensures that the City and its residents have access to a stable and sustainable water source. The City of Iqaluit and its residents have been heavily impacted by water emergencies over the past four years. The Disaster Mitigation and Adaption Fund approval for $214 million is essential to improving the quality of life of Iqalummiut and enhancing economic growth in our capital city."
