LARGE ITEM PICK-UP SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 19-23
JUNE 9, 2017 (IQALUIT, NUNAVUT) – The City is pleased to announce that this year’s large item pick-up program will be held for one week, from Monday June 19th until Friday June 23, 2017. During this week, residents will be provided the opportunity to dispose of two appliances as well as three large household items that weigh 50 pounds or more, and are too large to fit into a black garbage bag.
Work crews will be working throughout the City the entire week, collecting same-type items on any given day. For example, one day a crew may pick-up only appliances. If this collection does not take that long, they will then start collecting another pile of large-items for disposal.
Residents interested in participating in this program are asked to have all items placed beside the garbage bins Sunday evening, June 18th. Items should be sorted into separate piles – one pile each for furniture, and appliances. Items should not be stacked, and should also not be mixed with regular waste. All items collected will be disposed of in the landfill.
Items not intended for pick-up should be removed from the garbage bin area (i.e. bikes, toys) to ensure they aren’t taken by mistake.
Please also note that Commercial zones are not included in the large item pick-up (i.e. downtown core, West 40, and Federal Road).
TO HELP PREPARE FOR THE LARGE ITEM PICK-UP, PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES:
The following items will be accepted:
 3 large items maximum per household, plus 2 appliances - (washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, or stove):
 Items that are either 50 pounds or more, or that will not fit into a closed garbage bag, including:
• Furniture (couches, chairs, tables, mattresses, etc.)
• Flooring (carpets, under padding, and sheet linoleum), bundled in maximum 1.7 m x 1 m (5 ft. x 3 ft.) lengths (one bundle equals one bulk item)
• Plumbing fixtures, including toilets
• Windows and mirrors
The following materials WILL NOT be collected, and must be taken to the West 40 Landfill for disposal:
• Mixed waste piles
• Building and demolition debris
• Wood (construction/demolition waste, shelving, pallets, crates, doors, etc.)
• Electronics (televisions, computers, etc.)
• Household Hazardous Waste
• Automobile parts, including vehicle seats
• Tires
• Metal
• Propane tanks
• Soil and rocks
• Pet waste
• Cardboard boxes – which can included in the regular residential pickup, or taken to the landfill.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

WHAT CAN BE INCLUDED IN THE LARGE ITEM PICK-UP?

Large items weighing over 50 lbs., or large enough that it will not fit into a black garbage bag, as well as two appliances.

WHAT IS NOT ACCEPTED IN LARGE ITEM PICK-UP?

Metal, electronics, wood and tires are not accepted. Commercial waste is also not accepted, as this is a residential service.

IS THERE A LIMIT?

Yes. Each household can dispose of three large household items, plus two appliances.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I HAVE MORE THAN 3 ITEMS?

Residents are responsible for taking any additional items for disposal to the landfill.

WHEN DO I NEED TO PUT OUT ITEMS FOR COLLECTION?

Sunday June 18th, items should be placed beside your garbage bin. Remember to remove any household items not intended for disposal, such as bikes or toys from the garbage bin area, to ensure they aren’t taken by mistake.

HOW DO THE ITEMS NEED TO BE ORGANIZED?

Items should be separated and placed into separate piles for each type of material, and not stacked. Regular garbage should also be kept separate, and should not be included with the large items. Also, please respect the limit of three items.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COLLECTED ITEMS?

Items collected during large-item pick-up are disposed of in the landfill.

Residents can also help reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill by selling, trading, or giving away items in good condition.
