Elders Gathering 2010
This year’s gathering will be August 23-27 in Iqaluit, NU. There will be approximately 200 Elders attending the gathering from all over Nunavut and Nunavik.
This annual gathering provides an opportunity for the Elders of Nunavut and Nunavik communities to meet in an intergenerational setting. The main focus is the discussion of community concerns, the promotion of closer ties between generations and the bridging of social gaps through education and prevention. Having the opportunity to share community concerns and discuss solutions inspires our Elders to seek a more active role in our community and join in community wellness efforts. Inspiring the Elders to help solve the social issues facing their children and grandchildren, benefits the youth back in each Elder’s community.
Special Events
Iqaluit offers a wide variety of programs and recreational activities for people of all ages. There are many sports groups,
leisure clubs, special interest groups, programs and service organizations to appeal to everyone.
The City of Iqaluit Recreation Department organizes many Special Community Events throughout the year from national
events like Canada Day and the Terry Fox Run to events that are unique to our city such as Toonik Tyme and Christmas Games.
Celebrations such as these bring the community together to participate in traditional activities and give tourists a taste
of our distinct northern culture. Volunteers are always needed to make these special events possible. For a detailed list
of Iqaluit's Special Events and this year's dates, please see below. To see dates of events organized by other community groups,
